The same TimberSharp sharpener works with all five carbide cutter sizes. You simply need to select the correct cutter for the chain installed on your chainsaw.
How to Find Your Chain Size
The correct carbide cutter is determined by your chainsaw chain's pitch. You can usually find the pitch marked on the chainsaw bar near the powerhead. On some chains, the size may also be stamped directly onto the chain.

Important Information About 3/8″ Chains
The standard 3/8″ chain is the size that can cause the most confusion. For most full-size 3/8″ pitch chains, the correct choice is the 7/32″ carbide cutter.
There is one important exception: Stihl 3/8″ chains. These chains use slightly smaller cutter dimensions than many other standard 3/8″ chains. The difference is very small — approximately 1/64″ — but it means a 13/64″ carbide cutter is the recommended size instead.
For the other chain pitches, the manufacturer generally does not affect which carbide size you need:
- .404″ pitch → 7/32″ carbide cutter
- .325″ pitch → 3/16″ carbide cutter
- 3/8″ Low Profile / Picco / Micro / LP → 5/32″ carbide cutter
- 1/4″ pitch → 1/8″ carbide cutter
Whether your chain is made by Stihl, Oregon, or another manufacturer, you can normally select the carbide cutter based on the chain pitch. The main exception to remember is the full-size Stihl 3/8″ chain.
